Divisional
Commander's Message
The huge range of Winter Initiatives that have
been taking place across the City over the festive period are coming to
an end, and I am encouraged by the results. All officers and staff have
worked hard to ensure a high visibility presence and crime prevention
messages have helped keep crime levels low, and anti social behaviour
to a minimum. Hogmanay policing plans were well executed by our officers
in a good-natured atmosphere, and the low levels of arrests reflect a
fantastic attitude between the police and the public.
I am pleased to see that some of our officers
have been recognised over the past few weeks for their hard work and achievements.
PC Simon Daley, CBO for Broughton, has received notable recognition for
his work building relations between the Scottish and Polish Communities
with the new war memorial in Redbraes Place. He will travel to London
later this month to receive a Community Award from the Prime Minister
at 10 Downing Street.
Daragh Gleeson from Portobello has been awarded
Probationer of the Year after the Force recognised his positive attitude,
commitment and excellent crime solvency rates.
Last but not least, CBO Neil Doig was nominated
for the Community Policeman of the Year Awards in London for his years
of dedicated service to the Broomhouse and west Edinburgh areas. Although
I am understandably biased I thought Neil should have won this particular
award.
While these officers have shown
incredible dedication to Lothian and Borders Police, I’m encouraged
by every member of staff’s continued efforts to ensure public safety
and look forward to a productive year ahead.
Chief Superintendent Colin Campbell
HOT
TOPICS
Edinburgh is beautiful, scenic place to live and there are lots of well-known
beauty spots to visit and enjoy the city’s scenery first hand. Many
of these areas have parking facilities and unfortunately thieves have
been taking advantage of this lately. In a number of cases, victims have
arrived, parked their cars, placed valuables in the boot and on returning
found that their car has been broken into while neighbouring cars with
no valuables in the boot remain untouched. This would indicate that thieves
may be observing from nearby and targeting only vehicles that are worth
their while.
To reduce the chances of falling victim to this
type of crime, we advise that you make sure you lock and secure your car
whenever you leave it and don’t leave valuables on display. Car
thieves often steal first and think about value later. Take your valuables
with you or lock them in the boot prior to arriving
at the destination where you intend to park up. Don’t be
tempted to hide things under the seats or leave them in the glove box.
Satellite Navigation systems are also
highly sought after and we have found that some criminals are looking
for the sucker mark that is left on the inside of your windscreen by the
handset, then breaking in on the off chance that you’ve hidden the
goods somewhere in the car. TAKE YOUR
SAT NAV UNIT WITH YOU.

AND FINALLY
During the Festive period, we ran an operation called “Aura”
and specifically targeted anti-social and alcohol-related behaviour.
The initiative, run under the local Community
Plan focused on preventing alcohol behaviour in young people becoming
health or social problems for them and society both now and in later years.
Known hot-spot areas were regularly patrolled,
and over 270 litres of alcohol seized
from under-age youths in South Edinburgh.
We will be running a similar operation
during the school holiday periods, including test purchasing of alcohol,
and information concerning suspect premises, other areas where under-age
youths congregate and drink is welcomed.
