Community and Neighbourhood Watch News - Issue 47 - July 2008

Divisional Commander's Message

On 2nd May 2008, ‘A’ Division launched a Test Purchasing Scheme to tackle the number of underage people purchasing alcohol across the city. By working with 16-year-old volunteers we were able to target premises we believed were selling alcohol to under age people. Over 70 premises have been tested so far with an extremely low failure rate where young people were actually able to buy alcohol.

A good deal of antisocial behaviour faced by our communities results from under age people buying and consuming alcohol. To continue to address this issue and to support the upcoming Safer Scotland Initiative Campaign and alcohol fuelled violence we will continue with test purchasing operations in the coming months.

If you have any information concerning licensed premises selling alcohol to people under the age of 18 please contact your local police station.

Chief Superintendent Colin Campbell

HOT TOPICS
Now that the summer holiday season is upon us, it is natural for people to relax and enjoy the warm weather. During the summer months, the population of Edinburgh swells with tourists from all over the world who come to enjoy our scenery, architecture and International Arts Festivals. Unfortunately the summer also presents additional opportunities for criminals keen to exploit people who have momentarily lowered their guard.

By considering the following advice you will make it difficult for these criminals to operate. This advice is equally relevant when you are abroad holiday.

- Before you leave the house, ask yourself “Do I need my Laptop, MP3 player, camera and cash with me?” If you don’t leave them at home.
- If you’re parking your car, make sure you don’t leave anything of value inside and make sure the windows are closed.
- Keep hold of your valuables. Don’t leave your jacket, bag, laptop, phone, camera or wallet unattended even for a few seconds. That’s all it takes for thieves to help themselves.
- Beware of pickpockets. Don’t keep your wallet or purse in your bag. Carry cash in a pocket close to your body. It’s less likely to be stolen from there.
- Always secure your bicycle with a good quality padlock to an immovable object in a busy well-overlooked area.

Remember; we live in a safe city but don’t tempt fate. Stay alert but above all enjoy the summer and take advantage of the host of attractions available in Edinburgh.

VANDALISM
Unfortunately vandalism still accounts for a high proportion of the crimes recorded each month. Most of this vandalism is directed towards vehicles, whether it is wing mirrors being kicked off or aerials bent. Vandalism can be a very difficult crime to solve unless an individual is caught in the act or there are witnesses to the incident.

If you see an individual(s) that gives you cause for concern, don’t wait until he/she has committed a crime. Contact the police and explain to the call taker what your concerns are. Where appropriate officers will be despatched to attend the location and will endeavour to trace and identify those concerned. It may be that the individual(s) is there for a genuine reason but it ..

… may just be that the individual(s) was about to commit crime, but thanks to your vigilance a crime has been prevented.

DON’T wait until it’s too late. With your assistance we can reduce crime.

TAGGED INCIDENTS

During the month there were 142 incidents logged by the police in respect of your ward. Of these only 6 were graded 1, i.e. emergencies; 46 were Graded 2 i.e. not emergencies but should be responded to within one hour. The remainder were dealt with by the Community Beat Officer or patrol officers.

AND FINALLY
With the summer comes an influx of tourists, festival goers and visitors to our city. This puts pressure on our already crowded roads and parking especially can become an issue.

Whilst parking offences are generally administered by the City of Edinburgh Council there are occasions when the Police become involved – specifically when the parking becomes ‘dangerous’ or ‘obstructive’. However any kind of inconsiderate parking has an adverse effect on our neighbourhood.

Please consider where you park, please consider the particular needs of those around you, please be patient with those not as understanding. Please respect the Parking Attendants whose job is to ensure everyone abides by the parking regulations. Further information and advice on parking can be accessed from the City of Edinburgh Council website.
