How our Nearly New Sales work.

If you're coming to buy....

- Queuing normally starts about an hour before the doors open! If you arrive at 11am, then expect the queue to be down the full side of the Church and out onto the pavement. (This has been the case for the last few sales!)
- No buggies or prams are allowed in the sale halls. There just simply isn't enough space, plus there are stairs to negotiate. To help, we operate a buggy park where you can leave your buggy outside. The park is supervised on a cloakroom-ticket system and it's completely free!
- If you can shop without the responsibility of looking after toddlers or babies, it makes for a more enjoyable experience for you!

If you're thinking about being a seller....

What can, and can't be sold...
- We can sell nearly new baby’s, children’s and maternity clothes, toys, baby and nursery equipment.
- We cannot sell clothes which have a drawstring, or hand-knitted toys, or baby walkers on wheels or mains electrical goods (but battery operated ones are fine).
- Prams, pushchairs and buggies can only be accepted for sale if they carry a permanent safety mark.
- We reserve the right not to display items which are of poor quality. These will be removed from the sale and put aside for collection at the end of the sale.

Before....
- Firstly, the number of sellers is strictly limited.
- Each seller buys a book of tickets for a fixed price.
- The seller fills in the tickets with their allocated seller number, a brief description of the item, its price and then they attach the ticket to the item to be sold.
- All items to be sold are delivered to the selling hall on the Friday evening.

During....
- On the Saturday (Sale Day!), the doors open to allow the (long!) queue of buyers in.
- After buyers have selected items they wish to purchase, they take them to the "tills" where the tickets are removed and totalled up. The buyer pays the total price and then leaves with their goods.
- At the end of the sale, any items that are left unsold are sorted according to the sellers' numbers. These must then be collected by each seller by a specified time on the Saturday afternoon.

After...
- All the tickets that have been removed from items that were sold are then carefully sorted according to the sellers' numbers (see image on the right!). We aim to deliver a cheque to each seller for the total value of the goods that they sold within a week of the sale happening.
- Please note that we do not take a percentage of the selling price of each item*
- However, there are tea, coffee and biscuits available to buy whilst the sale is in progress!

Our Nearly New Sales generate money for the sellers (!), Polwarth Parish Church and local groups and charities. See the Contact Us page to find out where we are, and the Supported Charities page to view who have benefitted from our past sales.

* From April 2008, in order to maximise the amount of money that we raise to give to Charities, we are adding in a small percentage fee in addition to the fixed price for the book of tickets. This will take the form of 10% of the amount of takings over £50** for each seller. For example, if a seller only sells £48 worth of items, they are paid £48 after the sale. However, if a seller sells £58 worth of items, they are paid £57.20 after the sale. We have taken 10% of £8 (that is, the amount over £50) which amounts to 80 pence, in this example.

** For our Nearly New Toy Sales, the figure is £30, above which commission is taken.
